Start with Vision
Early in the life of a Christian Community Hub it is really beneficial to ensure that the core team share the same essential beliefs, vision and values. With hindsight I took this a bit for granted. I should have taken more time to ensure that the key people were all on the same page. If you are a dynamic, driven leader as I am/was then it can be possible to overlook this and assume that everyone seems enthusiastic, therefore we all agree. If only!
Agreeing on a set of vision and values is mostly about getting the team together to arrive at a shared understanding and consensus. The process of doing that is just as important as the words you end up with. Your team will engage with the vision and values far better if they are involved in shaping them and unpacking what they mean. For that reason it can be helpful to repeat the process at different stages during the life of the community. This serves a reminder for those who have been around awhile and is essential to bring newcomers fully on board.
Critically, when it comes to decision making at any level, those involved should be guided by the vision and values statements. It can often be tempting to look at what other churches or charities do in a particular circumstance, or to be guided by personal instinct or preference. The vision and values provide a benchmark for the whole team to refer back to.
